5 Reasons to not overcrowd your freezer and refrigerator.

Do you have plans to entertain guests at your home or do you just have a couple of teenagers living with you? If the answer is yes, then you may have an overfilled refrigerator and freezer. If this happens occasionally, then don't panic, but if this is the norm for you, then you'll want to consider these 5 reasons why not to overcrowd the refrigerator and freezer.

1. Loss of Freezer Efficiency: The first reason why you need to avoid overloading your freezer is that it will not work as efficiently. Your freezer works significantly harder to keep your food cold when overfilled. In order for your refrigerator and freezer to remain cold, the air has to circulate well. If the fridge-freezer is overcrowded the air vents are blocked and this prevents air circulation. Therefore, your food is not going to stay as cold.
2. Higher Utility bills: As mentioned above, your freezer is going to work significantly harder if you have overcrowded it. Because of this, your utility bills will be higher. Your freezer uses electricity to power the compressor which keeps the food cold. Overfilling the appliance taxes the system and requires more electricity. As a result, your utility bills will go up. If you are looking for a way to stay on budget and save money on your utility bills, you need to avoid overloading your freezer.
3. Poor Food quality: When the freezer or refrigerator is packed with too many foods for longer periods, it leads to the deterioration of the food products. Too many containers and food boxes block air circulation and alters the temperature. This can cause bacterial growth in the stored food, causing stomach problems when you consume them. Also, forgotten food can develop freezer burn (gray color, off-taste, and texture). To save yourself money by avoiding throwing out bad food and a trip to the doctor, keep your air vents unblocked in the fridge-freezer.
4. Extend the life span of your refrigerator-freezer: Your refrigerator and freezer are significant investments. Therefore, make sure you protect them accordingly, otherwise, you will shave years off of their lives. Potential concerns that could shorten the lifespan of your freezer are blocked air vents, restricted airflow, and increased compressor wear. This can be easily managed by removing some items and creating open spaces.
5. Defrosting the freezer: Frost inside your freezer is caused by moisture coming into contact with the coils inside the appliance and freezing. It can lead to odors, loss of storage space, and ineffective sealing of the appliance door. If you overload your freezer, it will have thicker frost in a much shorter amount of time. Normally, a freezer will need to be defrosted once a year, but an overfilled one will need it more often.
