It's time to prepare your home for the winter season. Here are a few must-do maintenance items to check off your list.
Clean your gutters. Winter is Florida's rainy season, so it's vital to keep your gutters running smoothly. Clogged gutters and blocked downspouts can lead to overspill resulting in soil erosion in your lawn. Gutter clogs can also cause water to back up and damage the soffit and fascia which could cause leaks into the home.
Get a furnace checkup. It's a good idea to have your HVAC system serviced twice a year: AC pre-summer and furnace in the fall. Usually, the service provider will give a discount and special priority for service calls if you enroll in a yearly plan. Did you know that the salty beachy air can put extra stress on the outdoor HVAC unit? It's good to rinse it off monthly and change the air filters every two months.
Make your home safe. Change batteries in smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and smart home devices. If your alarms are hardwired into your home’s electrical system, replace the backup battery at least every 6 months and replace the smoke detector itself once every 10 years. Don't forget about the fire extinguisher. Check the pressure gauge on the extinguisher to ensure it is still charged.
