Smoke detector 101

Many homes are equipped with hard-wired smoke detectors with a battery backup in case of a power outage. Do you know how often you need to change the batteries and how long the detector lasts?

First Alert recommends you test your alarms at least once a month to ensure they are working properly and replace the batteries in your smoke alarm every six months, usually done when the time changes. The detector itself should be replaced at least every ten years. For 10-year lithium-powered smoke detectors, you won’t need to replace the battery. Instead, replace the alarm after 10 years from the manufacture date on the back of the alarm. If your detector is hardwired into your home’s electrical system with a battery backup, then test the battery at least every 6 months, replacing the battery when indicated. The hard-wired smoke detector should be replaced at least every 10 years.

Honesty Guard Homewatch maintains this standard with their clients so they can feel safe at home. Were you away from your seasonal home during the time change? Don't worry; Honesty Guard Homewatch can update your clocks and test your detector batteries.
