After a hurricane or storm, you should consult your insurance agent before making any other decision.
Here are a few tips to remember if you need to make a claim.
Take plenty of photos and videos of the home's damage.
Call and report the damage to your insurance agent.
After speaking with your agent, prevent further damage. For example, place a tarp over a roof leak, remove wet items from the home, and remove the wet baseboards/drywall at least 3 ft over the water line.
Do not make repairs or replacements until the insurance adjuster assesses the damage.
Don't assume the person calling you is who they say they are. The government or insurance agencies will not contact you (call, text, email) before you contact them. When in doubt, hang up and call your local insurance agent for help.
Don't pay vendors for repairs in full upfront. Save all your receipts.
Be aware of Assignment of Benefits (AOB). AOB's are no longer legal in Florida. If signed, you transfer the insurance claim rights or benefits to a 3rd party (aka contractor). The AOB gives the third party the authority to file a claim, make repair decisions, and collect insurance payments without your involvement. Beware of any contractor asking you to sign any document before consulting your insurance agent.
